Since 2013, Indian law has required large companies to spend part of their profits on corporate social responsibility (CSR), often through partnerships with NGOs. This book traces the long, uneasy relationship between business and civil society in India and the recent turn toward collaboration through CSR, social enterprise, and impact investing. I argue that these partnerships are unlikely to deliver inclusive and sustainable development. Companies can use their role as helpers to deflect critics instead of changing how they do business.
